Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
